Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Serves: Frosts one cake
Prep Time: 10 minutes

This creamy and delicious homemade vanilla buttercream has such a pretty white color. It's perfect for an elegant cake, or a tasty background against vibrant decorations, like fresh berries. I use this frosting when I make this tasty white layer cake.


  • 1 c. unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4 c. powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 t. real vanilla extract
  • ¼ c. whole milk



Cream the butter in a large mixing bowl with a hand-mixer until perfectly smooth.


Sift in the powdered sugar and continue mixing until smooth.


Add the vanilla and mix to combine.


Slowly add in the milk, one tablespoon at a time, while mixing until reaching the desired consistency.
